Outbound: Stockholm → Pesaro (June 12–14)

3 nights Stockholm → Pesaro. 2 sleeper trains, 1 day stop in Erfurt (Thuringia).

• SJ Snabbtåg X 2000 (Stockholm → Göteborg, train 439): Departs Stockholm C 15:13 Fri Jun 12, arrives Göteborg C 18:42 (3h 29m). Bistro, wifi, wheelchair lift. 2nd class, refundable. Seat reservation included.
• SJ EuroNight 13471 (Göteborg → Berlin via Hamburg): Departs Göteborg C 19:30, arrives Hamburg Hbf 05:49, continues to Berlin Hbf 09:27 (terminus Berlin-Gesundbrunnen ~09:40). Conventional sleeper stock. Accommodation: 6-berth couchette (from ~€45), 2-berth sleeper with washbasin (from ~€80), single sleeper (from ~€165), deluxe sleeper (en-suite shower/WC). Book at sj.se. Opens ~3 months ahead — book from mid-March 2026. 48 min layover in Göteborg sufficient for boarding. Disembark Berlin Hbf (not Hamburg) — extra ~3h40 in bed, skips Hamburg–Hannover construction zone entirely.
• ICE 1007 (Berlin → Erfurt): Direct, 1h36, dep 10:36 → arr 12:12. Berlin–Halle–Erfurt line unaffected by 2026 closures (only Erfurt–Nürnberg–Regensburg–Passau corridor closed Feb 7 – Dec 12). Seat reservation optional (€4.50). Chosen over the later ICE 839 (11:05 → 13:06) for extra time in Erfurt; verified live on bahn.de for Jun 13 2026.
• ICE 1101 (Erfurt → München): Direct via Nürnberg–Ingolstadt, 2h29. Arrives München Hbf 18:43, 1h24 buffer before NJ 295 dep 20:07. Backup: ICE 601 Erfurt 16:35 → München 19:08 (59 min buffer), or ICE 1601 17:14 → 19:43 (24 min, risky).
• Erfurt (day stop): Thuringian capital, low tourist density, picturesque medieval Altstadt. Highlights: Krämerbrücke (longest inhabited bridge in Europe N of Alps), Domplatz with twin cathedral + Severikirche, Fischmarkt, Augustinerkloster (Luther site). Lunch: Thüringer Bratwurst (must-try), Thüringer Klöße, Köstritzer Schwarzbier. Luggage storage at Erfurt Hbf. E-scooter rentals on Voi/Tier/Bolt/Lime apps if walking distance is an issue (Hbf to Altstadt = ~10 min walk).

Now falls on a Sunday (Jun 14) — likely runs (major trunk route, listed in Trenitalia guaranteed services) but verify Sunday schedule on trenitalia.com closer to departure. Note: NJ 295 has poor punctuality (avg 31 min delay). If delayed, backup: RV 3905 at 07:34, arriving Pesaro 09:30.

Return: Tropea → Udine → Stockholm (June 29 – July 3)

The trip's last southern stop is Tropea (Calabria). From there an overnight train + a daytime run up the boot reach Udine, where the original booked Austrian-corridor return (Udine → Wien → Hamburg → Stockholm) continues unchanged. 4 sleeper trains + 1 daytime Italian run; day stops in Udine (+ Cividale del Friuli), Vienna, and a Lüneburg day trip. Chosen over a direct southern exit because it keeps all three already-booked night trains (NJ 40236, NJ 490, EN 344) — same daytime budget (~12h), no cancellations.

Booked — ticket CW5JE5 (€123, 3 pax, 2nd class). Arrives Roma Ostiense; cross to Roma Tiburtina (~7 km, metro line B from Piramide or taxi for the 500 m walker) for FR 9406 — ~1h40 buffer.
• Frecciarossa FR 9406 (Roma Tiburtina → Venezia Mestre): Dep 07:45 Tue Jun 30, arr 11:23 (3h38). Booked — ticket CW5JH5 (€39, 3 pax, 2nd class — Interrail supplement). 21 min connection at Venezia Mestre to RE 3438.
• Regionale RE 3438 (Venezia Mestre → Udine): Dep 12:14, arr Udine 13:51 (1h37). Free with Interrail, no reservation — just board. (Venice is on the exclude list; pass through Mestre only.)
• Udine layover + Cividale del Friuli (~9h, 13:51 → 22:47): Stash bags at Udine station left-luggage. Side-trip: regional branch line Udine ↔︎ Cividale del Friuli (~20 min) — Tempietto Longobardo (UNESCO Lombard site), Ponte del Diavolo over the turquoise Natisone. Back to Udine ~18:00 for Piazza della Libertà + an osteria dinner — frico, cjarsons, San Daniele prosciutto, Friulano/Ribolla wine. Centro ~1 km from station → taxi. Board NJ 40236 at 22:47.
• Nightjet NJ 40236 (Udine → Wien): Dep 22:47 Tue Jun 30, arr Wien Hbf 08:17+1. Booked: car 402, seats 42/44/46. Conventional stock, breakfast included, via Villach/Salzburg.

• SJ EuroNight 344 (Hamburg → Stockholm): Dep Hamburg Hbf 21:53 Thu Jul 2, arr Stockholm C 09:56 Fri Jul 3. Booked, couchette, 2nd class, refundable. Daily except Saturday departure.
• Daytime note: under a strict 22:00–08:00 = night definition, on-train daytime totals ~11h52 (Tropea→Udine adds ~5h vs the bare Udine return; the rest is the night-train tails). A direct southern exit via Munich would be the same ~12h but needs rebooking; a seat-night variant could cut it to ~6h at the cost of one berth + a day — not chosen.

The 60-day validity window covers Jun 12 – Jul 3. Travel days consumed by outbound + return routes: 7 of 15 (the Tropea→Udine connection adds one over the bare Udine return), leaving 8 days for Italy.

Night train rule (since 2019): a direct overnight train consumes 1 travel day = the departure date. No second day consumed on arrival, provided no train change after midnight.

Alternative: 10 days in 2 months (€447/€335, family total €1,229) — saves €292 but only 4 days left for Italy, very tight.
