1. Age Brackets & Child Policy

Key point for this trip: A 13-year-old is classified as Youth, NOT Child. The free child policy only applies to ages 4–11. The 13-year-old needs a Youth pass (which gives ~25% off adult price).

The free child pass deal does not help here. Both parents would buy Adult passes, and the 13-year-old buys a Youth pass at the discounted rate.

3. Which Pass Fits This Trip?

• Stockholm → Pesaro (outbound, Jun 12–14): 3 travel days
• Udine → Stockholm (return, Jun 30 – Jul 2): 3 travel days
• Transit subtotal: 6 travel days
• Remaining for Italy: 9 days (with 15-day pass) or 4 days (with 10-day pass)

Recommended options

Option A: 10 days in 2 months (Flexi) — TIGHT

• Valid for 60 days from activation (covers June 12 – July 3 easily)
• 10 travel days to use whenever you want
• Cost (2nd class): 2 x €447 + 1 x €335 = €1,229
• Cost (1st class): 2 x €568 + 1 x €426 = €1,562
• 6 days consumed by transit, only 4 days left for Italy — very tight

Option B: 15 days in 2 months (Flexi) — RECOMMENDED

• Valid for 60 days, 15 travel days
• 6 days for transit + 9 days for Italy — comfortable margin
• Cost (2nd class): 2 x €553 + 1 x €415 = €1,521
• Cost (1st class): 2 x €702 + 1 x €527 = €1,931
• Best if you want flexibility to hop on trains spontaneously

Option C: 22 days continuous — ONLY if traveling very frequently

• Every day is a travel day for 22 days
• Cost (2nd class): 2 x €586 + 1 x €440 = €1,612
• Covers the full 22-day trip exactly

Option D: 1 month continuous — MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY

• Every day for a full calendar month
• Cost (2nd class): 2 x €696 + 1 x €522 = €1,914
• Cost (1st class): 2 x €884 + 1 x €663 = €2,431
• Only worth it if you are on trains nearly every day

Recommendation

15 days in 2 months (Flexi) is the sweet spot for this itinerary. Transit consumes 6 of 15 travel days, leaving 9 days for moving around Italy — plenty of breathing room. The price difference over 10-days-in-2-months is €292 for the family — essentially buying 5 extra Italy travel days for ~€58 each.

The 10 days in 2 months pass saves ~€290 but leaves only 4 days for Italy after the 6 transit days — too tight unless the Italy itinerary has very few train legs.

4. Family / Group Discounts

• No family pass exists. Each traveler buys their own pass.
• Free child pass: Only for ages 4–11 (max 2 per adult). Does NOT apply to a 13-year-old.
• No group discount on Interrail passes.
• Youth discount (~25%) is the only discount applicable to the 13-year-old.
• Sales: Interrail occasionally runs flash sales (typically 10–20% off). Past sales have occurred in spring (March/April). Worth watching for before purchasing.

5. Youth Pass for a 13-Year-Old

• Age 13 qualifies for the Youth category (ages 12–27).
• Youth discount is approximately 25% off the adult price.
• The youth must have their own pass (mobile or paper).
• Youth age is determined by age on the first day of pass validity (June 12, 2026).

6. Reservation Fees on Night Trains (on top of Interrail pass)

Important: Interrail passes cover the train fare, but night trains and many high-speed trains require a mandatory reservation supplement per person. This applies to ALL pass holders including children/youth with free or discounted passes.

ÖBB Nightjet (dynamic pricing — varies by route/date/demand)

Relevant for routes like Munich–Rome, Vienna–Italy, Hamburg–Zurich, etc.

Children pay the same reservation fee as adults on Nightjet. Even with a free child pass (ages 4–11), the reservation supplement is the same per person.

SJ EuroNight (Stockholm – Hamburg)

• Children under 15 get 25% discount on SJ reservation fees
• One child 0–5 may share a berth with an adult free of charge
• Family tip: couchette compartments have 6 berths; you can book the whole compartment for privacy (pay for 6 berths, or the "whole compartment" rate if cheaper)

Note: SJ EuroNight service to Hamburg may be discontinued after August 2026 due to subsidy changes. However, RDC has confirmed they will continue operating the route (possibly with reduced frequency). This should still be running for June/July 2026 departures.

Snälltåget (Stockholm – Berlin/Hamburg via Copenhagen)

• A private couchette compartment for 3 people would be ~€176–216 total (excellent value for a family)
• Until 12 May 2026, private compartments can be booked by 2+ passengers with Interrail; normally requires 4+
• Children under 15 get 25% discount on Snälltåget

Italian Domestic (Trenitalia Frecce / Italo)

7. Global Plus Pass (new for 2026, beta)

A new Global Plus Pass bundles seat reservations for high-speed trains into the pass price. Available as 5 or 7 days within 1 month. Costs roughly €100 more than the standard equivalent. Caveats:

• Must activate within 3 months of purchase (vs 11 months for standard)
• Only available in 5-day and 7-day variants
• Does NOT include night train reservation supplements
• May simplify booking in Italy where Frecce trains require reservations

Not recommended for this trip because the 5/7 day window is too short for a 22-day journey, and the night train supplements (the biggest extra cost) are not included.
